Burnout and depression can look very similar from the outside — and from the inside. Both involve exhaustion, reduced motivation, withdrawal, and difficulty functioning. But they are distinct conditions that respond to different interventions. Getting the distinction right matters.
Burnout is primarily situational — linked to sustained workplace or caregiving stress. Depression is a clinical condition with biological, psychological, and social dimensions. Burnout can trigger depression, and depression can worsen burnout. If in doubt, seek professional assessment.
If symptoms are severe, persistent, or include thoughts of self-harm, seek professional support immediately. Do not attempt to self-diagnose or manage severe symptoms alone.
